Losing one or several teeth is a common issue that goes beyond the physical gap in your smile. It can impact your other teeth, jaw, masticatory muscles, and face. Subsequently, it can be detrimental to your confidence, chewing function, nutrition, and overall well-being. Now think about losing all your teeth and how disastrous that can be. Unfortunately, it is still common to lose all your teeth to caries, infection, gum disease, abscess, trauma or oral cancer. In this blog, our Board Certified Periodontist, Dr Babak Najafi discusses some of the available options to restore your teeth and confidence.

I am losing all my teeth! What should I do?

“Unfortunately, extracting your teeth is necessary and helpful at times to prevent further infection and abscess, as well as to avoid more bone loss. Losing your jaw bone is a silent phenomenon that can jeopardize the available options for replacing your teeth. These days, there are several great options to replace your failing natural teeth.”

Losing you teeth is a journey, not the destination. With the help of the dental experts at Origins Specialty Dentistry, the Implant Center of San Antonio, you can regain your smile and confidence. Our Specialists, Dr Najafi, Periodontist and Dr Kheirieh, Prosthodontist are here to provide personalized solutions for you and your family.

I am not happy with my denture. Can I get implant? Would that help?

“Yes. Dental Implants provide a stable and long-lasting foundation for replacement teeth. They offer several benefits by acting as an anchorage for the denture teeth or even the fixed options.

Additionally, dental implants are custom-designed to match your jaw providing a natural-looking and comfortable fit. They also prevent bone loss in the jaw, which can occur when teeth are missing. At times, bone grafting or some other regenerative surgeries may be needed to prepare the sites for dental implants.

While dentures may be more affordable than implant options, they may require more maintenance and would not offer the same level of stability, function, and comfort.”

How many implants would I need?

“That depends on several factors which would be evaluated in your initial visit to go over the recommended options for you. Do not forget that there is no one size fits all. Generally, there are some common implant options including Implant-Retained Overdentures (Implant Dentures, Implant Snap On Denture), Fixed Implant Complete Dentures (Hybrid Implant Options, All-on-X), and Implant-Supported Fixed Prosthesis (Implant Crowns and Bridges). Each option has its own indications and requirements. The required number of implants to replace all teeth in one jaw can vary from 2 to 10 implants.”

Which implant option is good for me? Should I go with all on four implants?

“Each person is different. I firmly emphasize on getting a patient tailored treatment plan for yourself. That is why Dr Kheirieh & I would need to have a thorough consultation with you to go over the specific full mouth implant options which would fit your mouth. All-on-4 is one of the options which would be great for some patients considering their smile line and expectations.”

Are all implant options fixed?

“No. Some full arch implant options are semi-fixed. In other words, you need to take out the implant overdentures at night and then put it back on in the morning. However, they are fixed and very retentive during the day. This is one of the popular full mouth implant options.

Some other implant options are fixed and permanent. In other words, you cannot remove the implant prosthesis. You would need to brush & floss around your implant teeth.”

How expensive are dental implants?

“This depends on several factors, but I should point out that not all implant options are expensive. Depending on your own mouth & expectations, there are numerous implant options that you can select; from the less expensive full mouth implant options to the most pricey full fixed ones.”
