Gum Disease

Many people overlook their gum health when discussing oral health, focusing solely on the state of their teeth. However, maintaining healthy gums is crucial for overall oral health, as gum diseases can lead to serious complications if left untreated. To ensure a healthy oral cavity, it’s essential to be familiar with various types of gum disease and their symptoms, as well as how to prevent or treat them effectively.

Gum diseases can be categorized into 4 main groups:

1- Plaque and Bacteria-Related Gum Disease:

Some gum diseases (Gingivitis and Periodontitis) result from the presence of plaque and bacteria. Plaque and bacteria can negatively affect the gums, leading to various diseases. Poor oral hygiene, as well as factors such as inadequate nutrition, certain medications, and other health conditions, can contribute to the buildup of plaque and bacteria on the gums.

2- Gum Recession:

Gum Recession and/or Mucogingival Defects is another common oral condition exposing the root surface of the tooth. Gingival recession can happen due to several known or unknown reasons such as aggressive brushing and flossing, genetics, improper tooth position, history of unsupervised orthodontic treatment, hormonal changes, or periodontal disease. As the gums recede, it can leave the tooth root vulnerable to sensitivity, decay, cosmetic problems and eventual tooth loss if left untreated.

3-  Non-Plaque-Related Gum Diseases:

Apart from plaque, certain viruses, and fungi can also cause gum disease. These issues may have genetic origins or arise due to factors like allergies, ulcers, or the body’s response to foreign substances. In some cases, the exact cause of these gum diseases may not be clear.

4- Gum Lesions:

Gum Lesions are other types of gum conditions characterized by white, red, or same-color patches or spots on the gums or inside the mouth. While these patches or lesions may initially be harmless and resolve on their own, persistent patches or bumps for more than two weeks may require dental evaluation as they could indicate a risk of oral cancer.

Symptoms of gum diseases include:

  • Gaps between teeth and gums
    1. Gum recession
  • Bleeding gums during or after brushing
    1. Changes in tooth alignment
    2. Persistent bad breath
  • Bad taste in the mouth
    1. Gum tenderness and swelling
    2. Redness and inflammation
  • Gum sensitivity to touch and pressure
  1. No symptoms

It is not uncommon for gum disease to be a silent disease and not causing any symptoms. Routine periodontal check-up and cleaning is crucial to evaluate the status of your gums.

Treating gum disease:

It’s important to understand that dental care isn’t just about treating tooth decay or tooth-related issues. Gum health is equally crucial, and prompt treatment of gum disease is essential in maintaining overall oral health. Early detection of gum disease makes treatment easier and more effective. Therefore, regular dental check-ups are essential for timely diagnosis.
